The National Defense Service Medal (NDSM) is a United States Armed Forces award given for honorable active federal service during specific periods of national emergency, not for combat. It recognizes service during four designated eras: the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War (Desert Shield/Storm), and the Global War on Terrorism. Unlike campaign medals, the NDSM is awarded to all eligible U.S. service members regardless of their location or whether they served in a combat zone.
Service Periods:
Korean War: June 27, 1950 - July 27, 1954
Vietnam War: January 1, 1961 - August 14, 1974
Persian Gulf War (Desert Shield/Storm): August 2, 1990 - November 30, 1995
Global War on Terrorism: September 11, 2001 - to a date to be determined
Ribbon Symbolism: The colors, including a central gold stripe and narrow red, white, and blue bands, are derived from the American Defense Service Medal and symbolize the nation’s colors and the opportunity for youth to serve.
